「Chen Sheng」——A Legend of a Name

I. Chen Sheng's Background

At the end of the Shang Dynasty, when the vassals ruled the roost, a man named Chen Sheng from Yangdi County, Nanyang Prefecture (now Yuzhou City, Henan Province), married a woman named Yan and gave birth to a son, Chen She, who later became Chen Sheng. In his childhood, Chen Sheng was intelligent and talented, but his family was poor, and the burden of life was too heavy. Eventually, he had to leave his hometown to make a living elsewhere.

II. Chen Sheng's Original Intention

During that period, King Qin Shihuang united the six states, implemented strict laws and conquest policies, and imposed harsh tax and labor systems, making the people's lives unbearable and falling into dire straits. Chen Sheng saw the suffering of the people and developed the idea of changing this situation. He believed that everyone was born equal and should not tolerate the exploitation and oppression. Therefore, he began to travel around, mobilizing the people to revolt and formally embarked on the road to confrontation against dictatorship.

III. Chen Sheng's Achievements and Experiences

At first, Chen Sheng's rebellion was of small scale, only a few poor people successively responded. But he didn't give up promoting his ideas, strengthening his connections, and expanding his influence. Later, Chen Sheng met Zhanghu, Zhaoguo and other people in Yingchuan, and the scale of the uprising expanded significantly, with high morale and stable military heart. They began to clarify their goals, steadily advancing, and ultimately eliminated the imperial army and established the first peasant regime in China's history—the Western Han.
